Both my boyfriend and I have remained remarkably free of illness this winter.  He had a slight sniffle after a very brief trip to India last week which was unexpected considering he spent more time on a plane than on the ground. I thought I was coming down with something over the weekend but I soon realised it was just my hayfever kicking off even earlier than usual.

Three years is a fair chunk of time.  It’s as long as I was at university for – longer if you consider that the academic year runs from October to June.  To the day, it’s the length of time that it took for me to qualify as an accountant. I was an only child for three years before the slightly unwelcome arrival of my younger brother.

We went out for dinner with a group of my boyfriend’s university chums on Saturday night.  When his friend had been trying to book a table for the ten of us earlier in the week, nearly every place he tried was full.  One restaurant told him that he’d struggle to find space anywhere as it was the first weekend of February and everyone would be out celebrating the end of a dry and/or abstemious January.

I’ve never really been one for collecting random bits of kitchen equipment. Sure, I have a reasonable number of cookbooks and my shelves are full with an odd assortment of ingredients but with the notable exception of my stand mixer (which I only bought because it was half price) and my much-loved food processor, my kitchen is relatively gadget-free.

lemony yoghurt cake

I’ve made this cake twice in the last five days. I might even make it for a third time tonight. It’s disappeared quickly – a sliver for breakfast with a dollop of yoghurt and a sprinkle of granola; a nibble when I get home from work in the evenings; a slightly more substantial chunk, scattered with pomegranate seeds, after we’ve eaten dinner.
